Join us for a double bill of Irish World Music with two of Ireland's upcoming world fusion bands.
Sun Merchant is a genre-defying band that has been captivating audiences with their eclectic blend of alt-rock, blues and gypsy jazz influenced spontaneity - featuring oriental and balkan-style motifs. Drawing from a diverse palette of influences, their sound is both familiar and refreshingly unique. As a trio, there is enough headroom for these musicians to weave playfully in-and-out of the song structures into improvisatory territory during live performances, promising a fresh array of sound at each performance.
Rasa Nua are a Cork-based ‘world music’ collective lead by Jorge Kachmari (clarinet, percussion) and Dara O’Brien (sitar). Their sound encompasses the worlds of Indian classical, jazz, blues, Balkan and contemporary music. With original compositions, fluid interactive dialogue and palpable chemistry, Rasa Nua provide a new flavour of music - engaging, exploratory and fresh.
At a Sun Merchant gig, you are likely to hear electric guitar improv or oud taqsim over the synchronised groove of the rythm section in 7/8 and at other times some straight up power trio staples. The band is currently recording their debut album, their debut Single Hold My Sober highlights their rock side with future releases to come exploring their other sides.
