Cork Cine Club committee member John Talty saw DREAMS at the Access Cinema Viewing Weekend and loved it. His comments: “I loved this film’s portrayal of a teenager’s crush on a new teacher and how she captured this intense emotional rollercoaster in her diary, and how the diary became a conduit to remarkable developments for the teenager as she transitions from a quiet, shy girl into young womanhood. The story is beautifully told with humour and pathos and also raises some interesting perspectives for the audience.“

17-year-old Johanne becomes infatuated with her charismatic French teacher Johanna. Uncertain whether the teacher’s kindness and affection towards her indicate any romantic intent, Johanne explores her confusing feelings by writing them down as a novella. When Johanne’s protective mother and more liberal grandmother read the manuscript, the three generations of women each contemplate their hopes, dreams and sexuality.

Like the other two entries in Dag Johan Haugerud’s ‘Oslo Stories’ trilogy (all of which are standalone, thematically-linked films rather than a continuous story), Dreams is an elegant and nuanced exploration of intimate thoughts and emotions. Unfolding largely through fascinating conversations, this is a shrewd and insightful film about the joy, confusion, embarrassment and disappointment of one young woman’s coming-of-age experience.

Elegantly styled, sensitively acted and crafted with keen intelligence… Dreams deserves admiration, with a terrific, highly affecting lead from up-and-coming Ella Øverbye. – Screen Daily

Haugerud’s delicate direction, paired with Cecilie Semec’s gauzy cinematography, builds a world that’s dreamlike but grounded. Knitwear is an unexpectedly titillating star. – Irish Times

This is an amiably talky film, and yet I never for a moment considered that the central relationship was being presented with anything less than seriousness, and there is much dry comedy to be enjoyed. – Guardian

For anyone with sharp recollections of the heady rush of first love and the obsessive fixation on one person to the exclusion of all else, Dreams will strike chords. – Hollywood Reporter
