Affluent Parisian couple Anne [Juliette Binoche] and Georges [Daniel Auteuil] start receiving mysterious videotapes of their own home. Under surveillance by persons unknown, the couple fear for the safety of their 12-year-old son. As tapes continue to arrive, Georges suspects a figure from his past may be responsible - but confronting that person means revisiting old secrets and transgressions.
Twenty years after its Cannes premiere, Hidden (Caché) has cemented its status as a modern classic. Director Michael Haneke deconstructs the apparently idyllic lives of one wealthy family while shining a light on some of the darkest chapters of modern French history. With its peerless use of video footage and refusal to offer easy resolutions, this is one of the great films of the 21st century.
Winner:
- Best Director - Cannes Film Festival, 2005
- Five awards, including Best Film - European Film Awards, 2005
Hidden is Michael Haneke's masterpiece… It is one of the great films of this decade. - The Guardian
It's an indecently gripping movie, undeniably about colonial guilt and the legacy of the Algerian War. But, equally, by the film’s closing credits multiple questions remain. - The Times [UK]
This is my favorite kind of movie -- one that allows you to watch it. Indeed, insists that you watch it, that you meet it at least half-way. - RogerEbert.com
Michael Haneke's most mainstream film to date is this exquisitely calibrated and jittery thriller. - Daily Telegraph
Haneke raises questions of guilt, responsibility and complacency that have global implications. Yet he never gets distracted from the business of building suspense. - BBC
Hidden is a cat-and-mouse thriller, the only problem being that mouse and cat insist on swapping roles. - The New Yorker
